Multi-country trip planner

The best bits are between the places you'd have booked.

Tell it where you're starting, where you're heading and how long you have. Corridor draws a route through the countries in between, fills it with places worth stopping, compares every train, coach, ferry and flight on each leg, and prices the whole trip — beds, dinners and daily spending included.

How it works

Three things you know, and one route you don't.

Most travel tools want you to already know where you're going. This one starts from the two ends and the time in between, which is all most people actually have.

1

Set the two ends

Start, destination, how many days, how many of you, and what you can spend each. Pin anywhere you already know you want to see — a city, or somewhere a friend lives.

2

Get a corridor

It finds a line between them and fills it with places worth the stop, spread across countries rather than clustered in one. Every suggestion is priced against the route you already have.

3

Adjust and share

Swap a flight for a night train and watch the total move. Your whole plan lives in the page address — copy it to whoever you're travelling with. No account, nothing saved on a server.

What it handles

The awkward parts of a long trip.

Every mode on every leg

Fast train, regional train, coach, ferry, night train and flight, side by side with realistic fare ranges. Force any one of them and the whole trip re-costs.

Night trains that pay for themselves

A sleeper is transport and a bed at once. The planner credits it with the bed-night it removes, and caps them — nobody sleeps on a train every night.

Detours priced properly

Not "Ljubljana is nice" but "Ljubljana is €94 and six hours off the line you already have". Marginal cost is the only number that helps you decide.

Fares that vary by country

The same 300 km costs about five times more in Switzerland than Bulgaria. Each country carries its own price index rather than one flat rate per kilometre.

The spending you forget

Food, local transport and a sight a day is usually about half the trip — far more than the train fares people agonise over. It's modelled per city, because it varies threefold.

The nearest hospital, on every stop

Every stop carries its closest hospital with an emergency department, the local emergency number, real hostels near the centre and the markets worth eating at — pulled from OpenStreetMap, not invented.

Continents joined properly

Backpack across Europe, take one gateway flight, carry on overland through Asia. "Avoid flying" means within a continent — there is no ground route to Bangkok.

Start somewhere

Or begin from one of these.

Each one loads into the planner below, where you can change everything.

per person · estimated

Modelled estimates, not quotes and not availability. Nothing here is bookable. Check every fare and connection with the operator — full terms.

Please read

Terms and conditions

Everything this planner shows you is an estimate. It is a rough guide for working out whether a trip is possible and roughly what it might cost — nothing more. It is not a quotation, a booking, a reservation, or a promise that any journey shown can actually be made on the days you have in mind.

Tell us when we get it wrong

These estimates are a model, and models are wrong in ways only a real traveller notices. If a cost is well off what you actually paid, a connection does not exist, a hospital is not where we say it is, or a route is simply daft — please tell us. Say where you went, roughly when, and what it really cost. That is the single most useful thing anyone can send us, and it is how the numbers get better.

Costs are modelled, not quoted

Every price comes from a statistical model built from distance, mode of travel and typical local costs. No price here has been checked against a live fare, an availability search, or any transport operator or accommodation provider. Real prices vary — often by a lot — with how far ahead you book, the season, the day of the week, demand, currency movements and your own choices. Ranges are shown because the single figure people want does not exist. Treat every number as indicative and budget for the upper end.

Routes and connections may not exist as shown

Connections come from a simplified model of the network. Journey times are approximations. Services shown may run at inconvenient times, only on certain days, only in certain seasons, or not at all. Routes change, operators withdraw services, and engineering works, strikes, weather and border closures all interrupt travel. Confirm every leg with the operator before you rely on it or book anything around it.

Places, opening times and descriptions

Descriptions of attractions, food and accommodation are general background, not recommendations or endorsements. Opening hours, closure days, admission prices and booking requirements are not verified and change frequently. Some attractions must be booked weeks ahead and sell out. Accommodation tiers describe a typical standard, not any specific property, and nothing shown is checked for availability.

Hospitals, emergency numbers and other local listings

Hospital, accommodation, food, sight and transport listings come from OpenStreetMap, a volunteer-maintained database. They are shown for orientation only. Coverage is uneven, entries may be out of date, closed, or mis-tagged, and a place listed as a hospital may not have an emergency department, may not treat walk-in patients, and may not be the most appropriate facility for your situation. Straight-line distances are shown, not travel distances. Nothing here is medical advice and none of it is a substitute for local emergency services. Emergency numbers are provided as general reference and can change — confirm the correct number on arrival in each country. In an emergency, call the local emergency number rather than travelling to a hospital named here. Make sure you carry appropriate travel and medical insurance.

No booking, no agency, no commission

This tool sells nothing. It takes no payment, holds no reservation, acts for no operator, and is not a travel agent, tour operator or package organiser. Any booking you make is a contract between you and that supplier alone, on their terms. Nothing here forms part of that contract.

Your own responsibilities

You remain responsible for passports, visas, permits, vaccinations and entry rules; for travel insurance appropriate to what you are doing; for your own safety and for current government travel advice on every country on your route; and for checking accessibility with each operator and property where that matters to you. Border and visa requirements are not modelled here at all — a route drawn on the map does not mean you may legally travel it.

No liability

Provided as-is, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for any purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for any loss, cost, missed connection, cancelled booking or wasted expenditure arising from reliance on anything shown here. If a decision would cost you money or time to get wrong, verify it independently first.

About this build

Backpack Corridor (backpackcorridor.com) is a working prototype built to demonstrate the planning and costing engine. Its city, connection and price data is illustrative and deliberately simplified, and is not maintained against real timetables or tariffs. Coastlines are from Natural Earth via world-atlas. Plans are stored only in the page address you are looking at — nothing is saved on a server and no account exists.
